Hi Friends!
Dogs have always been a huge part of my life. When I was a little girl, my mother didn’t want a dog. So when my father took my sister and me out and bought us a dog (Gambler, a miniature white poodle) you can imagine the uproar at our house!  I will never forget sitting outside under a tree with my sister holding the dog and crying to keep him. My mother gave in and we kept the dog! We eventually added a second poodle, Chipper, a rescue from the APA. So it began…my love affair with dogs!
When I graduated from college and got my first apartment, the first thing I did was get a dog. Buster, the bouncing beardie! Although I did this against the advice of my parents (they thought it was too much responsibility for a girl with a new job, new apartment and no money!), it was the best thing that I have ever done. Buster made responsibility worth while…someone to come home to, walk and care for. Buster also introduced me to my husband. Buster and I were out walking and met Pat and his Old English Sheepdog,
Foxy…let’s just say that it was a true life 101 Dalmatians! I’m sorry to say that we lost both Foxy and Buster (one to old age and one to cancer), but they will forever be in our hearts as our bouncing, herding, matchmaking pair.
Lucky the yellow Lab with a personality that can only be described as joyful was for my son, Jack. It was while Jack and I were in obedience training with Lucky that I lost my longtime career job in Commercial Real Estate (a blessing in disguise!). The company that I had worked for 15 years had been bought out and I was left with no job. I was pretty sure that I was finished with the corporate life and decided that I would become a dog trainer. After all, I had been training Lucky and our newly acquired rescued Basset Hound, Oscar (needy, high maintenance and the most loving dog ever), and although that was a work in progress, I was pretty sure that I could help others train their dogs. I began as an apprentice at Kennelwood and was soon teaching my own classes.  I found that I enjoyed working with dogs and the people who love them.
It was during this time that the idea for a pet boutique began to take shape. I had seen great shops for dogs and their people in other cities, but there really wasn’t anything here in town that had the types of items I was looking for…great collars, dog beds that actually looked good with home décor and gift items for the dog and the dog lover.  I decided that my store would be called “Lucky Dog” not just because of my dog Lucky, but because any dogs that have people that love them as much as I love my dogs have to be Lucky Dogs.
So here we are at Lucky Dog…my wonderful happy store! Not only has this become the place to go for everything dog (yes, we have the great collars, the dog beds that go with home decor, the gift items and so much more!), but it has become a place to hang out with friends and their dogs, a place to meet and greet with local rescue groups, to come to events that benefit the animal community, and a place to share our tale of why we love dogs.
Thanks for listening to my tale. Hope to see you at Lucky Dog soon!
